The challenge
Legal is a YMYL sector where Google applies stricter quality standards, and the firm competes for high-intent queries where directories and review platforms often outrank individual firms in AI answers. Until Search Console added AI reporting in June 2026, there was also no way to verify whether the AI visibility work was producing anything — it could only be spot-checked query by query.
Approach
What I did
- 01
Content built to the standard the sector requires
Cited sources, named and credentialed authors, and no claims that would breach advertising rules. In regulated sectors E-E-A-T stops being a buzzword and becomes the actual deliverable.
- 02
Answer-first page structure
The response a searcher needs placed at the top of each page rather than buried mid-article, because Google scans for chunks and will not dig for a buried answer.
- 03
Brand signal over link volume
Mentions across relevant legal publications and platforms, on the basis that AI answers draw heavily on directories, review platforms and third-party roundups rather than only on the firm’s own site.
- 04
Measurement once it became possible
Generative AI reporting set up as soon as it appeared on the property, cross-referenced against GA4 to track the branded and direct traffic that AI visibility actually produces.
Results
What changed
- A single page recorded 4,675 impressions in the Search Console Generative AI report
- AI visibility has trended upward steadily since the report launched in June 2026
- Visibility is now measured rather than inferred, so it can be planned against
- Branded and direct traffic tracked alongside AI impressions, where the real return appears
