What is JSON-LD and why does Google prefer it?

JSON-LD is a script-based way of adding structured data to a page without touching the visible HTML. Google recommends it because it sits in one clean block in the head, is easy to generate and maintain, and does not risk breaking your layout the way inline microdata can.

How to use it

1Pick the schema type that matches your page — LocalBusiness, Organization, Article or Video.
2Fill in the fields. Anything you leave blank is simply omitted, so the output stays clean and valid.
3Copy the generated JSON-LD and paste it inside the <head> of your page, or into Google Tag Manager as a custom HTML tag.
4Validate it once with Google’s Rich Results Test to confirm eligibility before you ship.

Why it matters

Correct structured data is the difference between Google inferring what your page is and knowing it. It powers rich results, feeds entity understanding, and is increasingly what gets a page pulled into AI Overviews and AI Mode as a citation.
